DECLAN DOHERTY

Since 1999 Declan has developed significant experience providing legal and strategic advice to both non-government organisations and major Australian and international companies with a strong focus on all areas of environmental law and regulation, communities, native title agreements, land access and licence to operate matters. Through this he has developed high-level stakeholder engagement experience and has advised clients from both the conservation and development sectors.

Declan is currently the Principal Solicitor at the Environmental Defender’s Office (WA) (EDO), having commenced in this role in January 2017. Prior to commencing at the EDO, Declan had over eight years’ experience in both management and in-house legal roles with a global mining company. These roles saw him advising senior management on environmental regulation, legal risk, corporate governance, government policy, land access and compliance in all areas of environmental law, including climate change, energy matters, environmental impact assessment, cumulative impacts, water management, and biodiversity. Declan also advised on native title, Aboriginal heritage and community relations. This included leading the legal support for the negotiation and implementation of native title and community agreements and compliance with heritage laws in Western Australia, as well as the company’s global standards in relation to human rights, communities and social performance. Declan was previously a Senior Associate at a national law firm advising clients on environmental law, town planning and project development approvals.

Declan has also held a broad range of voluntary leadership and governance roles in the not-for-profit sector, focussing on human rights and social justice issues, as well as in the arts and media sectors. This has included roles at Amnesty International Australia including Branch President Western Australia, Director of the National Board and delegate to two International Council Meetings for Amnesty. Declan has also previously been on the boards of Arts Radio Limited (RTRfm) as chair, as well as Artrage Inc and Short Back & Sidewalks Inc.

Declan holds law and commerce degrees from Murdoch University and a Master of Laws (Environment) from the Australian National University.
